Emily Bertrand earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2008 from the University of Arkansas. She has worked for the past seven years as a registered nurse in Northern Virginia, where she actively dedicates her personal time and professional activities to serving vulnerable populations, both locally and abroad.

Bertrand developed a prenatal education program for Arlington County free clinics with large immigrant populations. Incorporating her passion for Spanish and the Latin culture with her passion for nursing and helping others, Bertrand’s initiative included crafting an innovative educational program for Spanish-speaking pregnant women, leading prenatal education seminars in Spanish, and providing community resources for the participants. As a result of Bertrand’s dedication and commitment to service, immigrant women have become empowered to take better care of themselves and successfully navigate essential health services during and after a pregnancy.

Bertrand’s involvement with the Virginia Hospital Center’s Medical Brigade affords the opportunity to travel with a medical team to remote areas of Central America and deliver critical surgical procedures. She is responsible for providing direct patient care in Honduras, as well as year round fundraising and donations management. In addition to her professional activities and service work, Bertrand is committed to positively shaping the next generation of professional nurses through her academic endeavors at Marymount University, where she currently teaches undergraduate nursing. This May, she will complete her Master of Science in Nursing degree in the family nurse practitioner program at Marymount University.
