The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing will host an event focused on nursing diversity, inclusion and equity in the profession on May 2 at the Pat Walker Health Center.
The campus community and public are invited.
The guest speaker for the “Diversity, Inclusion and Equity: Points to Ponder in Relation to the American Nursing Profession” event is Edward Halloran, Ph.D., of the American Association for Men in Nursing. Halloran, a nurse who also holds a master’s in public health, will speak at 3:30 p.m. in the Pat Walker Health Center in rooms 116-117. A reception will follow in the same space.
Halloran will discuss his research, which he started at Yale, concerning the classification of patients by nurses and physicians using standard terms. He found a classification developed by the International Council of Nurses in the writings of Virginia Henderson and promotes the use of it by nurses to keep digital records on the human function of their patients for themselves and for Electronic Health Record systems.
Halloran is chair of the American Association for Men in Nursing, an organization he joined while an Illinois Ph.D. student. He administered nursing services in Connecticut, Chicago and Cleveland and taught nursing at Case-Western Reserve University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing recently formed a U of A chapter of the American Association for Men in Nursing.
One of the association’s goals is to encourage men of all ages to become nurses and join all nurses in strengthening and humanizing health care. The number of male nurses in Arkansas is below the national average, noted the nursing school’s executive director, Jessie Casida. “We are committed to diversifying the field through our college’s ‘WE CARE‘ and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives,” he said.
The May 2 event is sponsored by the U of A College of Education and Health Professions’ WE CARE initiative.
