The Journal of Research on the College President released its seventh volume, published by the National Lab for the Study of the College President. The journal includes five research articles from scholars around the country, including those from Marquette, Colgate, Seton Hall and Boise State University.
“This is perhaps our most diverse set of authors for an issue of the journal that we have published,” said Michael Miller, professor of higher education and the journal’s editor. “Our acceptance rate was 19% for this issue of the journal, and we were thrilled by some of the topics that were covered by the authors.”
Article topics include presidential longevity, the president’s role in student success, leadership during COVID, non-traditional president pathways and Black women college presidents.
“I was particularly pleased to see the study on non-traditional presidents in higher education,” Miller said. “The qualitative study highlighted the emerging trend of college presidents assuming the position with extensive business backgrounds. With the changing nature of higher education to be so accountability-focused, the study did an excellent job describing just how business-oriented presidential expectations are.”
The journal was first published in 2017 and was founded by Chancellor Emeritus G. David Gearhart, who held a professorial appointment in the higher education graduate degree program at the time.
Miller previously served as dean of the College of Education and Health Professions from 2016 to 2019.
